Abstract

Nowadays, competition is not longer happened between organizations but between supply chains. Thus, all players in a supply chain should share the same aims or values in order to win the competition. Many supply chains are supported by SMEs as their vendors/suppliers. Lean-Green and Sustainability practices have given benefit to large company. However, to best our knowledge, only a handful of studies have focused on the integration of Green-Lean practices and sustainability of supply chain as a joint approach and investigated in-depth the inter-related factors in the SME context. This research objectives are to 1) investigate the impact of integrating Lean and Green practices on performance of supply chain sustainability for SMEs; 2) develop a tailored framework according to the specific characteristics of SMEs; 3) formulate strategic initiatives and recommendation actions for SMEs supply chain sustainability. To achieve these objectives, the research methodology consists of 4 stages, namely conceptual model and hypotheses development, survey and data collection, path modeling and hypotheses testing, and the final stage – strategic planning and deployment. The conceptual model is constructed and developed by considering drivers and barriers of integrated Lean-Green practice. The questionnaire development involved and discussed with the owners or managers of Manufacturing SMEs in order to obtain appropriate survey instruments to measure Lean-Green practices and the current supply chain (SC) sustainability performance. This survey-based study uses purposive sampling. Data collections were carried out by distributing questionnaires to SMEs. This study examined the moderating effects of top management commitment and leadership (TMCL) and organizational culture transformation (OCTr) on the relationship between lean practice (LP) and green practice (GP). Moreover, it also investigated the moderating effect of both policy initiative (PI) and collaborative synergy (CS) on the relationship between GP and SC sustainability performance. This study involved and analyzed the data from 345 Indonesian Manufacturing SMEs using partial least squares path modeling (PLS-SEM). Our findings suggest that GP mediates LP to improve SC sustainability performance of SMEs. TMCL facilitates significantly the adoption of integrated lean and green practices. Meanwhile, OCTr, PI, and CS did not have a significant moderating effect. It means that OCTr does not significantly moderate LP for the adoption of GP. Nevertheless, based on another analysis, we found that OCTr has a significant effect on LP adoption. Similarly, the results demonstrate that neither PI nor CS have significant moderating effect on the relationship between green practice and SC sustainability performance. Interestingly, based on a separate analysis of each aspect of sustainability performance it is found that PI has a positive and significant impact on social sustainability performance only. In addition, our finding also indicates that CS affects all three aspects of SME supply chain sustainability performance. Separately, further comparative analysis was carried out between small and medium firms in each construct to gain a comprehensive understanding of lean and green practices for SMEs in Indonesia. Furthermore, the strategic planning uses a scheme of eco-functional matrix integrated with the Hoshin Kanri strategic planning matrix. In the end, this research recommends strategic initiatives as well as implementation programmes to assist SMEs owners or managers in implementing Lean and Green which direct them towards sustainability.
