Abstract

This research aims to test the fit-for service (FFS) of aboveground storge tanks without adequate data that have been abandoned for 5 years due to an earthquake. The methods used are in-situ PMI OES, visual inspection and NDT (MT/PT, UT, MFL), immersion tests according to the ASTM_G31 standard and assessment using the API-579-1/ASME-FFS standard.
Visual inspection and NDT are carried out to test the physical access conditions of the tank. Immersion test experiment according to ASTM G31_72 method in a mixture of hydrocarbons (avtur, diesel fuel, kerosene and oil residue). Visual inspection, NDT and immersion testing are used to determine the rate of material corrosion as input for fitness-for-service calculations and simulations.
The immersion test experiment was carried out as by immersing test coupons of ASTM A-36 steel material, welded carbon steel A-36 and A-106 Gr.B for 5 and 8 days (120 hours/200 hours) with temperature variations of 30oC (ambient temperature conditions) 60o (operating conditions) and 90oC (re-rating conditions). Experimental results show that the corrosion rate of ASTM A-36 and A-106 Grade B carbon steel materials in aviation fuel, kerosene, diesel and residues is between 0.01-0.25 mm/year.
The assessment results according to API 579-1/ASME-FFS tank wall and roof plates are in a fit-for-service condition with an estimated remaining life of > 10 years. Meanwhile, the bottom plate of the T-107 tank and the steam distribution pipe made from A-106 Gr B steel do not meet the FFS Level 1 criteria and must be repaired/replaced.
