Abstract

The original concept of mosques in Islam focuses on the simplicity and function of spaces that are mostly used for prayer and other religious ceremonies. However, mosques have now experienced a shift in function and role. Mosques were built significantly on a monumental scale and became central buildings or landmarks. Apart from that, mosque construction is now designed according to stereotypes that are deeply rooted in the minds of the public. The repetition of elements such as the shape of the dome, tower, mihrab, and others has little or no clear function. The shift in mosque function and repetition of elements according to stereotypes illustrates the lack of sustainable values that are able to accommodate user activities. To fulfill these values, the interior design of the Jami' As-Salaf Gresik Mosque applies the concept of Javanese cultural locality with a sustainability approach that focuses on social sustainability. The application of this concept was also obtained from collecting questionnaires from users, most of whom wanted the design of the Gresik Jami' As-Salaf Mosque to be able to contain local cultural values. Apart from applying local Javanese culture, universally designed living spaces also have an important role in achieving sustainable living. This concept is implemented in a design layout that is friendly to disabilities, with additional space that can accommodate user activities and design elements obtained from the transformation of ideas for typical Javanese building ornaments. The use of these ornaments is designed effectively so that, apart from fulfilling aesthetic functions and socio-cultural sustainability, they can also fulfill other elements of sustainability in terms of ecology and economics.
