Abstract

Denture teeth or dentures are a part of the denture that is attached to the denture base or artificial gums. The use of dentures in Indonesia reaches 1,4% and the fulfillment of their needs is imported. In general, the material used in the manufacture of dentures is methacrylate resin. In this study, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer was used as the main matrix. PMMA has poor surface and mechanical properties, so fillers need to be added to strengthen the mechanical properties of the PMMA matrix. Zirconium Oxide (ZrO2) is a metal oxide that is widely used as a filling material for dental materials. To increase the adhesion force or attraction between organic and inorganic compounds, coupling agents such as 3-methacryloxyproyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS) are needed. The composite polymerization method used in the manufacture of dental composites is by mixing powder materials in the form of PMMA, BPO as an initiator and ZrO2 filler which has been silanized with liquid material in the form of MMA monomer and Etylene Glycol Dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross linking agent. Mixing liquid powder in this method uses hand mixing in a stainless steel container until it reaches the dough phase and is molded in a mold according to ASTM for compression tests and Vickers hardness tests. Then the pressure is applied to the mold and put into the water bath. The polymerization technique used to activate BPO compounds is heat cured polymerization. The results obtained were that the ratio of powder liquid and the percentage of ZrO2 had an effect on the mechanical properties of denture teeth with the hardness test showing the best value for the lowest P/L ratio, namely 1.5 : 1 of 37.6 VHN, while the compressive test showed the best value for the P/L ratio of 2 .5 : 1 of 97 MPa with a Youngs Modulus of 1651 MPa at different filler concentrations, namely 5% and 3%. The best formulation was obtained at a powder liquid ratio of 2:1 considering the lowest amount of residual monomer compared to other powder liquid ratios with a ZrO2 concentration of 5%.
