Abstract

Based on an examination of the technical aspects and forthcoming challenges in energy efficiency technology pertaining to propellers, the design of the B4-70 propeller and its modified counterpart was formulated to scrutinize the impact of PBCF on propeller efficiency. Employing CFD based on Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes Equation (RANSE) and open water tests conducted in the BRIN-LHI Towing tank, Surabaya, this study sought to compare CFD simulation analyses with Wageningen experiments on the open B4-70 propeller. The results demonstrated a percentage deviation in average values of KT, 10KQ, η0 below 5%. In parallel, the Ka4-70 propeller with nozzle 19A exhibited an average deviation in values of KT, 10KQ, η0 ranging from 1% to 3%. Subsequent experimental activities at BRIN-LHI featured the B4-70 PBCF convergent propeller, revealing a 4% deviation in the values of KT, 10KQ, η0. Conversely, the modified propeller with nozzle 19A and divergent PBCF exhibited an average deviation in values of KT, 10KQ, η0 surpassing 10%. Although the B4-70 propeller with nozzle 19A and convergent PBCF yielded the highest thrust and efficiency values, this enhancement was constrained to the B4-70 propeller model. The increase was relatively inconsequential, attributed to higher average vorticity multiplied by velocity at the shaft centre, reaching values of up to 0.6 m2/s2, thereby averting a decline in pressure. Meanwhile, the modified propeller with nozzle 19A and divergent PBCF, with the most substantial thrust and efficiency values, experienced an appreciable increase limited to the modified propeller model. This was corroborated by higher average vorticity multiplied by velocity at the shaft centre, reaching values of up to 0.8 m2/s2, preventing a decrease in pressure.
