Abstract

Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is a plant originating from India and widely grown in the tropics and lowlands up to 700 m above sea level. The distribution of this plant is found in several regions in Indonesia, one of which is Poteran Island, Sumenep Regency, East Java. The Sumenep District Government in 2018 designated Poteran Island as an official area for moringa plant development due to its abundant population. Based on previous research, there are four groups of moringa plants distinguished by the Poteran Island community based on the color of their petioles, namely red, purple, green and white. Therefore, a more in-depth analysis is needed to prove the number of varieties of moringa plants, as part of the preservation of native Indonesian plant germplasm. The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity of moringa plant varieties on Poteran Island using a phenotypic taxonomic approach through morphological observations. Sampling locations were Talango Village, Banban Hamlet, Palasa Village, Essang Village, Cabbiya Village, Padike Village, and Sakolaan Hamlet. The dendrogram results show the existence of 4 groups of Moringa varieties, namely 1 white variety, 55 green varieties, 5 purple varieties, and 11 red varieties. Varieties that have the highest similarity are white varieties and green varieties with a similarity index of 0.87.
