Abstract

The amphibious aircraft (Floatplane) is one of the air transportation means that can land on both water and land. This type of aircraft is designed with floaters on the aircraft's landing gear to enable it to float on the water's surface. PT DI has planned the development of the N219 amphibious aircraft, requiring a Floater design that supports the aircraft's operations, including maneuvering in water. This maneuver study is crucial as the aircraft's maneuvering capabilities ensure the safety of N219 passengers from collisions with other objects when operating on water. The aim of this study is to analyze the maneuvering capabilities of the N219 amphibious aircraft concerning the distance between catamaran-type floaters, trim floaters, and operating speed. The proposed method involves testing the Floatplane model using the open free-running test technique, where the model's movement is controlled by an operator at the pool's edge through wireless communication. In maneuvering tests, circular maneuver trajectory points and yaw, sway, and roll movements are recorded. From the maneuvering test results, the best turning maneuver values were obtained at a distance between hulls S/L 0.5 and Fr 0.064, with values of A, T, TD, and R being 1.60 meters, 1.61 meters, 2.50 meters, and 1.27 meters, respectively. Additionally, the motion results revealed the best roll, yaw, and sway movement angles under the same conditions, with values of 5.753 degrees, 13.236 degrees, and 1.824 meters, respectively.
