Abstract

Study of embankment stability is one of the ways to discover the embankment condition. Monitoring of the embankment body can provide information related to indications of damage to the body so that some preventions and reconstructions can be carried out earlier. This study was conducted to identify seepage failure on the Sidoarjo mud embankment (LUSI). The embankment, located in Porong, Sidoarjo, East Java, had collapsed several times. In this study, identifying subsurface conditions of the LUSI embankment was carried out using the SelfPotential (SP) method. Subsurface interpretation using Ensemble Kalman Inversion (EKI) method shows the indications of SP anomalies at several points on three measured lines, which are P75-P76, P67-P77, and P78- P79. The results of the study discovered the equivalent correlation between the amplitude of the anomaly and the intensity of seepage. The SP data interpretation showed the presence of 4 anomalies detected at the distance of 211 and 324 to 407 meters at P75-P76. Furthermore, there were 9 anomalies along the P67-P77 line that characterized fluid accumulation or internal erosion. In addition, there are 4 anomalies along the P78-P79 line that are located at a distance of 47, 108, 162, and 182, respectively, with the interpretation of anomalies sources in the form of fluid accumulation in the embankment body (about 15 meters depth). The interpretation of SP data using EKI successfully indicates similarities between the calculated data and the survey area's condition.
