Abstract

Over the last few decades, corrosion of reinforcement is one of durability problems of concrete structures. The increase of rust volume resulting expansive stresses to the surrounding concrete and eventually cause cracks in the concrete covers.
This thesis focused on modelling damage of concrete due to corrosion. The load used in this thesis only focuses on the internal load due to rust expansion. In this study, corrosion was modelled as uniformand non-uniform configuration to investigate the effect between these two configurations to the damage in concrete. In addition, simulations were carried out by varying the configuration of longitudinal bar and the presence of stirrup reinforcement. The simulation in this thesis was performed by using the 3DNLFEA program.
Based on the study results, the validation process shows that FEM provides predictions that are in line with experimental results regarding pressure and corrosion cracking patterns. Based on the crack analysis the non-uniform corrosion shows more realistic cracking pattern compared to uniform corrosion. Furthermore, the configuration of longitudinal rebar and presence of stirrups also affect the overall pressure and cracking pattern of concrete due to corrosion.
