Abstract

The method of cooling fish in the cargo hold that is usually used by small fishermen, with vessels measuring 5 - I 0 GT, is currently still using block ice. This ice block method is less effective because apart from taking up space in the cargo hold, the weight of the ice block also affects the weight of the ship, where the weight of the ship will affect the fuel consumption used. Due to this problem, it is necessary to have other alternative sources as a replacement. One alternative way to use a cooling system is an adsorption cooling system. In this research, performance trials will be carried out on the adsorption cooling system which has been designed by previous researchers. The components of this adsorption cooling system are the collector, condenser and evaporator. The performance of this cooling system is observed based on the function of cooling temperature versus soaking time. The experiment was carried out by varying the immersion and the dosage weight of activated carbon and methanol. Research results show that a minimum cooling temperature of 24 °C was obtained within 60 minutes with a dosage weight of 3 kg of activated carbon and methanol. To increase the capability of the adsorption cooling system, it is recommended to increase the amount of active carbon and ethanol, increase the immersion time, and change the physical shape of each existing adsorption cooling system
