Abstract

Probiotic supplementation is one method of increasing feed efficiency and nutrient retention in fish. W. confusa is a bacteria that has been isolated from wild African catfish from the Brantas River, Surabaya. This bacteria has the potential as a probiotic which can help the digestive process in fish. This study aims to evaluate the effect of adding W.confusa probiotics to fish feed at different doses on feed efficiency and nutrient retention for catfish (C. gariepinus). 80 catfish used were divided into 4 groups: K0 (0 CFU/mL); K1 (104 CFU/mL); K2 (106 CFU/mL); K3 (108 CFU/mL) with 2 repetitions. Protease and lipase enzyme activity tests carried out as a preliminary test showed that there was protease enzyme activity by the W. confusa bacteria, but no lipase enzyme activity was seen. W. confusa was added to catfish feed using the spray method at 10 mL/Kg. Fish were kept for 30 days in an aquarium measuring 60x30x30 cm3. On the 30th day, fish harvesting, proximate testing and feed efficiency calculations were carried out. During maintenance, water quality maintenance and analysis is carried out. The results of feed efficiency and nutrient retention showed that the K3 group had the highest effect of 58.31% and retention of protein (63.66%), fat (13.84%) and carbohydrates (9.90%). W.confusa is able to increase the effectiveness of digestion and utilization of nutrients in catfish.
