Abstract

This study evaluates the usability performance of various icon formats on fire safety signage compared to ISO 7010 icon format standards. The study compares four icon formats: image-related, concept-related, semi-abstract, and combined. Thirty university students participated in experiments conducted in a controlled environment. Methods include a matching test assessing performance based on matching time and matching accuracy, and eye-tracking experiments measuring eye movement measures such as fixation duration, number of fixations, average pupil diameter, and number of saccades. A subjective ranking test was also conducted to measure participants' subjective preferences. The results from the matching test analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's test indicate that the icon formats have significant effects on matching time and matching accuracy, with the combined icon format outperforming others in terms ofboth matching time and accuracy. Eye-tracking data, analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test reveals that icon format significantly affects fixation duration, number of fixations, and number ofsaccades, but not average pupil diameter. These findings suggest that different icon formats have varying cognitive effects on participants. Additionally, participants favorably ranked the combined icon format in a subjective ranking test. Based on these results, adopting the combined icon format as the standard for fire safety signage is recommended to enhance recognition and response efficiency.
