Abstract

Microplastics are synthetic solid particles with a size range of >1 μm to <5 mm. Microplastics are of global concern due to their presence in various ecosystems and their tendency to negatively impact organisms, including sponges. Sponges can accumulate microplastics into their bodies because they have a feeding habit in the form of filter feeders. This study aims to analyze the physical and chemical characteristics and abundance of microplastics in freshwater sponges in Porong River, Mojokerto, East Java. Eunapius carteri and Oncosclera asiatica sponges along with water and sediment samples were taken from Porong River at a depth of about ± 1 meter. Analysis of physical characteristics (size, color, and shape) was conducted using a stereo microscope and Optilab. Analysis of chemical characteristics (polymer type) was conducted using Raman Spectroscopy (off-resonance) with an excitation wavelength of 785 nm. The abundance of microplastics from 2 locations of water (AEC and AOA) and sediment (SEC and SOA) samples in Kali Porong, obtained an average of 2640 particles/L in samples AEC and AOA and 1060 particles/kg in samples SEC and SOA. The size of microplastics in water samples is dominated in the range of 20 - 40 µm in samples AEC and AOA, while in sediment samples it is dominated in the range of 100 - 500 µm in sample SEC and the range of 0 - 20 µm in sample SOA. The color of microplastics that dominate at location 1 and location 2, both in water and sediment samples is black with fragments. The polymer types that dominated in the microplastic of water and sediment samples were polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), respectively. In freshwater sponges, the average abundance of microplastics in Eunapius carteri was 5280 particles/kg, while in Oncosclera asiatica it was 2840 particles/kg. The physical characteristics that dominate in both species are microplastics with a size range of 0-20 µm, black in color, and in the form of fragments. The type of polymer identified in the sponge sample is polyethylene (PE).
