Abstract

This study aims to develop a vehicle routing problem model for truck-drone fleet combinations to simulate operation on highways. The trucks operate on highways to deliver packages from one city to another. Drones operate off-highway to pick up and deliver packages to and from hubs. On the highways, rest areas serve as cross-docking (as hub) points for transferring Loads between trucks and drones. The focus of this research is on applied operations, aiming to explore the use of drones for logistics delivery, especially in e-commerce businesses that require fast delivery, such as same-day service. This research contributes an innovative contribution by combining several cross-docks into operations involving two different modes of transportation. The suggested model, Vehicle Routing Problem with Multiple Cross-docking (VRPMCD), builds on the Vehicle Routing Problem with Drone (VRPD) model by assuming a fleet of trucks with set schedules on highways between cities. The scheduling technique uses a heuristic algorithm to apply the given model and generate efficient solutions. This research contributes to the development of models and methods for future system implementations.
