Abstract

The initial stage in the installation of the jacket structure occurs when the jacket structure floats towards the seabed surface before being permanently installed with piles. During the stage without piles, the mudmat plays an important role as a temporary foundation in maintaining the stability of the jacket structure. On Bottom Stability (OBS) analysis is needed at this stage to ensure the stability of the jacket structure. The structural footing component that plays an important role in the OBS analysis is also known as the mudmat. Because the mudmat is crucial as a temporary foundation, its design and size must be considered in the structural design. Therefore, topology optimization is carried out to optimize the load distribution path and dimensions to obtain the optimum weight. In this study, mudmat topology optimization was carried out locally by reducing the material distribution until the minimum strain energy was obtained. The optimization results were then interpreted to obtain a feasible design. Two optimized mudmat designs were achieved with material distributions of 30% and 20%. Both of these designs produce a smaller Factor of Safety (FoS) compared to the initial design. The percentage of FoS reduction in the OBS analysis of bearing criteria for designs 1 and 2 is 59% and 50%, respectively, overturning 43% and 21%, and sliding 67% and 59%. However, both designs still meet the OBS criteria with FoS above the threshold, namely >2 and 1.5. In the initial mudmat structure, the structural weight is 49.8 kips. After optimization, two recommendations for optimized structural designs were obtained with a reduction in structural weight of 40% and 29%, respectively.
