Abstract

The demand for bone grafts in Indonesia has seen a significant increase, particularly with the rise in dental grafting or guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedures. However, most commercial bone graft materials do not meet the ideal properties required for grafts, especially in cases of large or vertical bone defects and atrophy. As a result, the use of hydroxyapatite as an implant material has become a preferred choice, despite its brittleness, necessitating structural modifications by forming a PCL/HAp composite. Polycaprolactone (PCL) is chosen due to its corrosion resistance, slow degradation, biocompatibility, and medical-grade classification. The planned factory will be located in Cirebon, West Java, to ensure the optimal availability of raw materials, specifically crab shell waste. This waste is projected to reach about 4.4 tons per day, potentially meeting the need for 76 dental implants per day in Indonesia and 770,000 per day in the Asia Pacific region by 2030. Consequently, the factory will have a daily production capacity of 2 tons of hydroxyapatite, which some of them will be used to produce 29,000 dental implants each day. The innovation includes process simulation, mass and energy balance analysis, and equipment specification considerations. Based on economic analysis, the factory is estimated to generate a net income of 67 trillion rupiahs after 30 years of operation, with an NPV (Net Present Value) of 17 trillion rupiahs. Therefore, the factory is deemed viable with an IRR (Internal Rate of Return) of 47.68%, which is significantly higher than the bank interest rate.
