Abstract

The problem of environmental pollution due to tofu industrial waste has occurred in the Murong River, located in Jombang Regency. The tofu industrial center in Jogoroto District dumps liquid industrial waste into the Murong River, where the tofu waste is not properly processed, thereby endangering the environment. In this research, an anaerobic-aerobic biological treatment of waste will be tested by utilizing the role of microorganisms that are naturally contained in the waste (indigenous) and the addition of microorganisms from outside (exogenous). Biological processing is intended to increase the stability of organic substances until the BOD/COD ratio reaches a stable zone. Laboratory-scale research was carried out by examining the effect of adding and not adding exogenous microorganisms and wastewater concentration on the effectiveness of biological wastewater treatment in stabilizing organic matter. The exogenous microorganisms added were Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Streptomyces sp. Variations in wastewater concentration used are 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%. The main parameters analyzed are COD and BOD, with supporting parameters are pH and temperature. Two-way ANOVA analysis was carried out to determine the significance of the influence of each independent variable. The results of the research show that the addition of exogenous microorganisms has a significant effect on the effectiveness of biological processing in stabilizing organic substances, with the rate of decrease in the BOD/COD ratio being greater than without the addition of microorganisms, specifically at concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%, namely 56.94%, 43.98%, 39.65%, and 15.66%. The COD values after treatment at each concentration variation were 2320 mg/L, 1813.33 mg/L, 1140.00 mg/L, and 656.67 mg/L, respectively. The concentration of wastewater also has a significant effect on the effectiveness of processing, where the smaller the concentration, the smaller the value of the BOD/COD ratio reduction rate. Wastewater concentrations in all variations with COD values of 1000 mg/L to 4500 mg/L can be treated optimally under aerobic conditions.
