Abstract

Digitalisasi telah memberikan banyak dampak positif yang dirasakan oleh penggunanya dan dapat membawa perubahan yang baik apabila dimanfaatkan dengan baik. Meskipun memiliki manfaat positif, digitalisasi juga membawa dampak negatif terhadap lingkungan, seperti peningkatan emisi gas rumah kaca akibat penggunaan energi dari data center. Saat ini data center menyumbang lebih dari 2% jejak karbon digital dan kemungkinan nilai ini akan bertambah menjadi 3,2% pada tahun 2025. Jejak karbon yang dihasilkan dapat memerangkap panas di atmosfer dan berkontribusi signifikan terhadap kenaikan suhu dan pemanasan global. Kota Surabaya telah melalui perkembangan signifikan dalam penerapan digitalisasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis jejak karbon digital dan potensi dekarbonisasi yang dapat diterapkan pada infrastruktur data center Pemerintah Kota Surabaya. Perhitungan dilakukan menggunakan metode yang dikembangkan oleh Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) yaitu 2006 IPCC Guidelines dengan mengalikan data aktivitas dengan faktor emisi spesifik dari sumber emisi. Perhitungan juga dilakukan dengan metode perhitungan oleh United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) pada pedoman perhitungan emisi fugitif. Melalui pendekatan studi kasus, dilakukan pengukuran jejak karbon saat ini dengan mengidentifikasi sumber-sumber emisi dalam operasi data center. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode perhitungan yang merupakan kombinasi antara metode Inventarisasi Gas Rumah Kaca dari Sektor Energi dan Sektor Proses Industri dan Penggunaan Produk (IPPU). Berdasarkan penelitian, sumber emisi karbon dari infrastruktur data center Pemerintah Kota Surabaya berasal dari emisi penggunaan listrik, penggunaan bahan bakar, penggunaan refrigeran pada sistem pendingin, dan penggunaan fire suppression. Sumber emisi karbon dari infrastruktur data center Pemerintah Kota Surabaya tahun 2023 mencapai 198.204,275 kg CO2-eq, dengan kontributor utama berasal dari penggunaan listrik perangkat server (88.624,656 kg CO2), AC (64.100,364 kg CO2), dan storage (22.636,849 kg CO2). Metode dekarbonisasi yang dapat diterapkan meliputi peningkatan efisiensi server melalui penyesuaian tata letak server dan teknologi virtualisasi, mengganti refrigeran pada sistem pendingin, serta meningkatkan efisiensi perangkat storage.

Digitization has brought many positive impacts that are felt by its users and can bring about positive changes if utilized properly. Despite having positive benefits, digitization also brings negative impacts on the environment, such as an increase in greenhouse gas emissions due to the energy usage from data centers. Currently, data centers contribute more than 2% to the digital carbon footprint, and this value is likely to increase to 3.2% by 2025. The carbon footprint generated can trap heat in the atmosphere and significantly contribute to temperature rise and global warming. The city of Surabaya has undergone significant development in the implementation of digitization. This research aims to analyze the digital carbon footprint and the potential for decarbonization that can be applied to the infrastructure of Surabaya City Government's data centers. The calculation was carried out using the method developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), namely the 2006 IPCC Guidelines, by multiplying activity data with specific emission factors from emission sources. Calculations were also carried out using the calculation method by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) in the guidelines for calculating fugitive emissions. Through a case study approach, the current carbon footprint measurement was conducted by identifying emission sources in data center operations. This study uses a calculation method that combines the Greenhouse Gas Inventory methods from the Energy Sector and the Industrial Process and Product Use (IPPU) Sector. Based on research, carbon emission sources from the Surabaya City Government's data center infrastructure come from electricity usage emissions, fuel usage, refrigeran usage in the cooling system, and fire suppression usage. In 2023, the carbon emissions from this data center infrastructure reached 198.204,275 kg CO2-eq, with the main contributors being electricity usage by server devices (88.624,656 kg CO2), air conditioning (64.100,364 kg CO2), and storage devices (22.636,849 kg CO2). Decarbonization methods that can be applied include improving server efficiency through server layout adjustments and virtualization technology, replacing refrigerants in cooling systems, and enhancing the efficiency of storage devices.
