Abstract

The Inactive Segment of the Banda Arc is a result of oceanic plate subduction following the separation of Gondwanaland in northern Australia, forming the Banda-Sunda Arc, with nonactive volcanic segments in Alor, Atauro, Wetar, and Romang ceasing activity approximately 3-4 million years ago. This study aims to investigate the potential volcanic and tectonic activity in the non-active segment of the Banda Arc, focusing on the islands of Alor, Atauro, Wetar, and Romang, which are suspected to have ceased activity around 3-4 million years ago. The data utilized include various sources such as multibeam echosounders, marine magnetometers, and conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) instruments, employing NETVOLC, MORVOLC algorithms, and geomorphological analysis. By leveraging geomagnetic analysis, bathymetry, and other data, this research seeks to identify possible remnants of volcanic activity that may still be triggered by regional tectonic dynamics and to identify potential magma intrusions. The study focuses on submarine mountains in the Banda Sea, specifically in the Wetar region, to reveal geomorphological characteristics, volcanic activity, tectonic structures, and geodynamic processes. Although no craters or calderas were found, MORVOLC and NETVOLC analyses indicate differing characteristics for each mountain, with Sundu showing signs of higher historical volcanic activity. Backscatter and geomagnetic data depict a heterogeneous seafloor substrate after classification at -27 dB boundaries, indicating varying volcanic potential across the mountains. Significant activity is suspected at Sundu and Deing due to their SVD values of 5.84×10⁻⁵ nT/m² and 2.21×10⁻⁵ nT/m², respectively, which are higher than the minimal absolute values, suggesting possible intrusions. WCI findings indicate no potential residual hydrothermal vent activity in the water column amplitude separation range of 16.780 dB to 19.020 dB. Turbulence analysis using the Optimized Thorpe method reveals mass water transfer processes around Sundu and Deing, with depths ranging from 0 to 470 m at Sundu and 0 to 824 m at Deing. Geomagnetic results and tectonic structural analysis suggest magma intrusion activity at Notu Munak and Deing, while Sundu shows signs of active tectonic activity. Geomorphological classification and tectono-volcanic characterization suggest that Notu Munak is in its final dormant phase, while Sundu may be extinct, though faulting may still provide a magma conduit.
