Abstract

In the coal mining industry, the secondary sizer is a crucial component of the fixed processing plant. Failure of this component can cause significant downtime, resulting in financial losses and decreased productivity. This research aims to develop a model to predict the shutdown time for the replacement of the secondary sizer using the Power Law Process (PLP) approach, as the observed machines are repairable and likely to experience an increasing failure rate over time. The results show that Secondary Sizer 01 fails faster than Secondary Sizer 02. The optimal shutdown strategy based on the PLP is when the machine reaches 28276 operational hours or the thirteen failure, whichever comes first. The minimum cost of failure with this strategy is 0,7893 USD per operational hour, with a total cost of 15.786 USD per average replacement cycle of 20,000 operational hours. Implementing this strategy reduces costs by 30,03% compared to the current policy. This research also modifies the business process flow, helping planners prepare spare parts more quickly and cost-effectively, and ensuring timely repairs. Additionally, it is recommended to have a training program to improve maintenance quality, with internal knowledge sharing for competencies above 50% and external training for competencies below 50%, which will overall enhance efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
