Abstract

Sodium chloride or NaCl has a huge availability in the nature and is utilized in various fields such as food and medical. One of sensing mechanism of NaCl solution is using SMS optical fiber. A NaCl solution sensor with PMMA/ZrSiO4 coated SMS has been developed in this research. The main sensing principle of the sensor is multimode interference (MMI) and evanescent wave penetration. Coating the SMS using PMMA/ZrSiO4 is done to increase the refractive indeces around core of the SMS. Moreoever, coating the SMS enable the modes to be excited and generate evanescent wave at the interface of the coat and the NaCl solution. This research has a promising result, which the coating of PMMA/ZrSiO4 contribute to increasing the sensor sensitivity. The sensitivity of uncoated sensor is 0,004 nm/% with the coefficient of determination (R^2) of 0,04; -0,172 nm/% with the R^2 of 0,77 for 0% PMMA/ZrSiO4 coated sensor; 1,586 nm/% with the R^2 of 0,93 for 0,5% PMMA/ZrSiO4 coated sensor; and 0,076 nm/% with the R^2 of 0,97 for 1% PMMA/ZrSiO4 coated sensor. In addition, temperature stability of each sensor are good which means that the NaCl solution sensing using PMMA/ZrSiO4 coated SMS resist to the change of ambient temperature.
