Abstract

The ongoing productivity of humans will inevitably result in the formation of waste piles. As a consequence of their role as waste producers, humans bear responsibility for the maintenance of the surrounding environment. It is therefore essential that all individuals possess an understanding of effective waste management practices, a knowledge that extends to the residents of Sidorukun Village. The efforts of Sidorukun Village in preserving the environment through the implementation of effective waste management strategies have been duly recognised, as evidenced by the conferral of the Proklim award in the main certificate category. The objective of this study is to identify the factors that influence participation in waste management, to examine the extent of community participation in waste reduction and handling activities, and to ascertain the level of community participation in planning and implementing waste management. The study employs descriptive qualitative methods. The results demonstrated that nine factors influence community participation: income, education, knowledge of simple waste management, exposure to information media, infrastructure facilities, availability of waste levies, waste management institutions, the role of community leaders, and external party collaboration. The community of Sidorukun Village has recognised and applied the 3Rs as a form of participation in waste reduction activities, as well as carrying out waste handling activities in the form of sorting, packaging, collection, and composting. The level of community participation in Sidorukun Village is evidenced by the planning and implementation of waste bank activities, where the planning stage has reached the partnership level and the implementation stage has reached delegated power.
