Abstract

============================================================
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 M occurred in the Cianjur area, West Java, on November 21, 2022. Until February 2023, more than 500 aftershocks with varied magnitudes were recorded. This research presents an earthquake analysis based on Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) values and earthquake intensity for the Cianjur area, with the purpose of determining the PGA value and earthquake intensity based on the MMI scale. PGA value was calculated using the empirical equations of Esteva (1974) and Campbell (1981), and the earthquake intensity was calculated based on the PGA value. The PGA value for the Cianjur region ranges between 7.14 - 35.19 gal with an earthquake intensity of IV-V based on the Esteva method, while using the Campbell method the PGA value is 4.08 - 61.97 gal with an earthquake intensity of IV-VI. Predicted PGA value based on the empirical equation was compared with the observed PGA from the accelerograph recording of the 21 November 2022 earthquake, with RMSE of 54% for Esteva’s and 52% for Campbell’s. The large RMSE value is caused by a significant increase in observed PGA data which affects near source effects and local geological effects. Overall, Esteva and Campbell's empirical method reasonably describes the distribution of PGA values in the Cianjur area. Overall, Esteva and Campbell's empirical method reasonably describes the distribution of PGA values in the Cianjur area, however the use of empirical methods cannot capture local details directly at the research location which can influence PGA values. This is because these two empirical models only consider hypocenter distance and magnitude in PGA calculations without considering local factors such as soil amplification, soil layer structure, local geological conditions, and so on.
