Abstract
Indonesia’s asphalt needs in 2022 reach 884.300 tons, to fulfill these needs, government
still to import 474.300 tons of asphalt. That makes the need for asphalt is still dominated by
imported asphalt as much as 707.324 tons. This amount is to meet the needs of asphalt
development and also asphalt maintenance in that year and the plan is that asphalt needs will
increase to 1.2 - 2 million tons in 2024. In the government's planning in 2024 it will stop
importing oil asphalt and switch to using local asphalt, especially asbuton, but the challenge in
the processing is not easy. Therefore, the variety of production of asbuton is not too much.
Though asbuton has the advantage of oil asphalt, which is a higher soft point, which means it
is more resistant to heat. This makes it less easy to melt and more efficient for use on highways.
In addition, the quality is better because it has a higher level of hardness. While oil asphalt that
is often used today is no more resistant to heat and also has a less good quality than the quality
of asbuton. For this reason, asbuton will be made into asphalt emulsion rather than hotmix
because it has advantages lower energy requirements, versatility, improved bonding, quick
setting, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits. It can be used at lower temperatures.. It
is expected that asphalt emulsion from asbuton meets the quality assessment of domestic asphalt
emulsion made by the ministry of PUPR and SNI 6832:2011. regarding "Specification of
Anionic Emulsion Asphalt" and also SNI 4798:2011. "Cationic Emulsion Asphalt
Specification".
The conclusion of this research is that water and asbestos bitumen cannot combine or
break due to factors of composition, unsuitable emulsifiers, low penetration of asbestos, various
contents of asbestos, and the extraction process of asbestos. Therefore, further research is
needed on the composition in making asphalt emulsion from asbuton, finding the right
emulsifiers, increasing the concentration of asbuton, knowing the content of asbuton, and
filtering the extraction results as well as being careful in the extraction process so that clay does
not enter the asphalt.
