Abstract

Grounding rods are crucial components in lightning protection systems, effectively channeling lightning currents into the ground. Soil resistivity and the installation depth of the grounding rod are critical parameters influencing its performance. Therefore, this study aims to determine the optimal dimensions of the grounding rod to minimize grounding resistance while considering the cost of grounding rod materials. The optimization methods used in this study are Monte Carlo and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for comparative purposes. The Monte Carlo method is used in simulations with COMSOL software to evaluate the variations in soil resistivity and depth on the performance of the grounding rod. The simulation data is then analyzed using the PSO method in MATLAB to find the optimal dimensions of the grounding rod that yield minimal grounding resistance. The results from both optimization methods are then compared to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of each method. The study's findings indicate that both Monte Carlo and PSO methods can identify the optimal dimensions of the grounding rod considering variations in soil resistivity and depth. However, the comparison of these two methods shows differences in computation time, implementation complexity, and result accuracy. The optimal dimensions obtained are expected to enhance the efficiency of the grounding system and contribute significantly to the field of lightning protection.
