Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of gender equality in the media industry, which significantly impacts editorial decisions and public perception. The study explores the implementation of the Gender-Sensitive Indicators for Media (GSIM) developed by UNESCO at TVRI World, the international television station of the Public Broadcasting Institution Television of the Republic of Indonesia (TVRI). The methodology used is qualitative with a case study approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation as an intern, as well as literature review and documentation. The Longwe Women’s Empowerment Framework was employed to analyze the implementation of GSIM at TVRI World. The findings indicate that the implementation of GSIM at TVRI World has reached various levels across the five dimensions of women’s empowerment: welfare, access, awareness, participation, and control. While there has been significant progress in several dimensions, challenges remain, particularly concerning the enhancement of women’s awareness and participation in decision-making processes. The study concludes that the implementation of GSIM at TVRI World holds great potential for advancing gender equality in the media industry. To achieve optimal results, more consistent and comprehensive efforts are required. Addressing challenges such as sustained leadership commitment, continuous staff training, and gender-sensitive monitoring mechanisms is crucial.
