Abstract

The quality development paradigm is the current global priority and focus step to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, many countries are still trapped in false development patterns that result in deforestation, air pollution, and decreased water quality. On the other hand, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as a source of state funding is experiencing a trend shift towards sustainable investment considering Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects. This research aims to analyze ESG factors that influence FDI. The method used is a quantitative approach with panel data regression analysis techniques. The sample for this research is 10 ASEAN countries from 2010 to 2021. The analysis results show that the Environmental (E) variable, interpreted as an indicator of forest area and carbon dioxide emissions, and Social (S), construed as an indicator of the Human Development Index, significantly negatively influences FDI. Meanwhile, the Governance (G) variable, interpreted as an indicator of political stability and legal accountability, shows that it does not affect FDI. Apart from that, other variables, such as macroeconomics, which are interpreted using indicators of Gross Domestic Product and inflation, show a significant favorable influence, and control variables analyzed by the population also show a significant negative impact on FDI. This research provides recommendations for the government to formulate investment strategies that encourage the implementation of ESG in promoting quality and sustainable development in ASEAN.
