Abstract

Pressure vessel is a tank used for storage of pressurized fluids, fluids in low temperatures and high temperatures. In operation, pressure vessels receive loads in the form of internal pressure, external pressure, the weight of the pressure vessel and its contents, and external loads due to nozzle installation. This nozzle installation can cause thickness thinning in the area around the nozzle connection which will increase the stress value in the area and can cause failure of the pressure vessel.
A solution to reduce stress in nozzle joint areas that have experienced thickness thinning is to add a reinforcement pad. These reinforcement pads ensure that the area can safely withstand operational stresses, especially in areas that are prone to geometric discontinuities. In this study, the authors analyzed the stresses, strains, and deformations that occurred in the pressure vessel before and after the addition of the reinforcement pad to review the strength of the pressure vessel in withstanding the nozzle load using the finite element analysis method. The material used for this pressure vessel is SA-516 Gr. 70.
The results showed that the addition of reinforcement pad strengthened the nozzle connection area because the stress in the pressure vessel decreased from 88,207 psi to 21,531 psi. In addition, the strain value also decreased from 0.0031696 to 0.00074353 and the material deformation value decreased from 0.050598 in to 0.03579 in. Further analysis shows that the finite element analysis stress value of 21,531 psi is below the yield stress of SA-516 Gr. 70, which is 37,700 psi. This indicates that the stresses that occur are below the elastic limit of the material, so no permanent deformation occurs. Therefore, the pressure vessel can be declared safe because it is able to withstand operational pressure.
