Abstract

Supply chain management services are rapidly evolving, including Third Party Logistics (3PL) providers that offer a range of services, one of which is warehousing. Warehouses play a crucial role as a bridge (buffer) between production and marketing processes to handle demand surges. Warehouse activities include receiving, put away & transfer, picking, and packing. Studies have shown that order picking is the most labour-intensive activity and incurs the highest costs, up to 55% of total warehouse operational costs, due to intensive material handling. PT XYZ, a warehousing service provider managing over 4,000 Stock Keeping Units (SKUs), aims to enhance service efficiency while minimizing costs. In its business operations, PT XYZ faces challenges with high warehouse occupancy and a random storage policy. Optimizing the order picking process can be achieved by placing materials in optimal locations to minimize material handling. The problem is addressed by reducing order picking costs through Integer Linear Programming for material allocation, considering demand correlation. The demand correlation analysis method used is the product moment. Material allocation (storage assignment) is planned by mapping items into fast moving, moderate moving, and slow-moving categories. Fast moving materials are assigned using a dedicated layout system, while moderate and slow-moving materials use a random layout system. Based on the optimization results, the improved layout was found to reduce travel distance by up to 89% for each fast-moving SKU compared to the existing condition.
