Abstract

Bata tahan api alumina digunakan dalam berbagai aplikasi industri yang memerlukan suhu operasi tinggi karena bata tahan api alumina memiliki sifat refraktori yang sangat baik. Alumina yang digunakan untuk pembuatan bata tahan api alumina umumnya berasal dari bahan baku alumina murni terkalisinasi yang memiliki kemurnian sangat tinggi yang diproduksi dari bauksit melalui proses bayer yang rumit dan berbiaya tinggi. Pengembangan formulasi alternatif seperti kaolin menyediakan kandungan alumina sedangkan pasir kuarsa sebagai sumber silika untuk pembentukan mullite. Bata tahan api alumina yang mengandung mullite diketahui memiliki sifat mekanik yang baik pada suhu tinggi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh variasi komposisi silikon karbida sebanyak 3-5% serta penggunaan binder bentonite dengan variasi 0%, 3%, 5% terhadap sifat mekanik serta sifat termal bata alumina tahan api. Material yang digunakan pada penelitian ini dilakukan pengujian karakterisasi dengan X-ray diffraction (XRD) dan Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), juga dilakukan uji bulk density, ketahanan abrasif, kuat tekan, konduktivitas termal dan Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) pada benda uji alumina refractory brick. Dari hasil penelitian diperoleh nilai sifat mekanik alumina refractory brick yang terbaik dengan komposisi optimum penggunaan 5% silikon karbida dan 5% binder bentonite, diperoleh nilai sebesar 2.46 gr/cm3, 2.99 cm3, 1,89 MPa, 0,3675 W/mK, serta kestabilan termal pada temperatur 718,05°C. Dapat diketahui bahwa kedua komposisi silikon karbida dan bentonit yang pada kadar tertentu saling melengkapi dalam meningkatkan sifat mekanik dan termal alumina refractory brick.

Alumina refractory bricks are used in various industrial applications that require high operating temperatures because alumina refractory bricks have excellent refractory properties. The alumina used to make alumina refractory bricks generally comes from calcined pure alumina raw materials which have very high purity which is produced from bauxite through the complex and high-cost bayer process. The development of alternative formulations such as kaolin provides alumina content while quartz sand is a source of silica for mullite formation. Alumina refractory bricks containing mullite are known to have good mechanical properties at high temperatures. This research aims to analyze the effect of variations in silicon carbide composition of 3-5% and the use of bentonite binder with variations of 0%, 3%, 5% on the mechanical and thermal properties of refractory alumina bricks. The materials used in this research were tested for characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), bulk density, abrasive resistance, compressive strength, thermal conductivity and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were also carried out on alumina refractory brick test specimens. From the research results, the best mechanical property values for alumina refractory brick were obtained with the optimum composition using 5% silicon carbide and 5% bentonite binder, obtained values of 2.46 gr/cm3, 2.99 cm3, 1.89 MPa, 0.3675 W/mK, and thermal stability at a temperature of 718.05°C. It can be seen that the two compositions of silicon carbide and bentonite complement each other to a certain extent in improving the mechanical and thermal properties of alumina refractory brick.
