Abstract

Cellular material, especially lattice structure offers significant weight reduction while maintaining robust mechanical properties, especially in energy absorption. This type of cellular metal features a porous geometric pattern with regular vertices and joints, promoting high mechanical strength with low weight that can be produced through methods like additive manufacturing combined with investment casting. From its properties, research focuses on optimizing these structures for specific applications, such as aluminum foam production, where the truncated octahedron lattice pattern demonstrates superior energy absorption and stress distribution capabilities. Variations in geometry impact mechanical properties, with considerations for strut dimensions influencing strength and stiffness. Furthermore, aluminum 6061 was selected for this study due to its advantageous mechanical properties, including high strength, corrosion resistance, and good machinability. Additionally, its relatively low weight makes it an especially suitable material for lattice structure applications across a range of industrial sectors. This research applies the additive manufacturing process in making PLA patterns which subsequently put into slurry mixture, then melted to create a hollow structure in the mold. The variable in this research is the diameter of the strut which variety from 4.0, 4.2, and 4.4 mm. The aluminum 6061 then melted at a temperature of 800oc in the electric furnace and poured into the mold that has been created. The products produced from the additive manufacturing-assisted investment casting process were then tested in terms of physical and mechanical properties. The results show that the strut with a diameter of 4.0 mm has the highest percentage of perfect casting in square shape (94.44%), the highest compression strength (14.852 MPa), and the best density (4.67 MJ/m3). The highest results in the Vickers hardness test belonged to the 4.2 mm diameter strut for the chill zone (49.17 HV5), the 4.0 diameter strut in the columnar zone (51.07 HV5) and equiaxed zone (54.1 HV5).
