Abstract

The increasing global demand for oil poses challenges in terms of the efficient transportation and distribution of this resource. In response to this growing demand, tanker ships have become a popular mode of transportation. As of 2021, 8,883 tanker ships were in operation worldwide. To address this need, it is crucial to design tankers with an efficient cargo volume. This research aims to enhance the cargo volume by focusing on small tankers, which are less than 90 meters and governed by MARPOL 73/78 Chapter 4 Part A Regulation 19, and BKI Volume II Rules for Hull Section 24. This study employs a direct search method to find the maximum value of the objective function, which is the cargo volume. This method was assisted by Visual Basic for Application to automate the optimization process. The optimization results will be integrated into Maxsurf software and verified against applicable regulations. Consequently, optimization of inner bilge area configuration design is key to meeting the demand for efficient vessels and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
