Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries that often experience natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. About 90% of earthquakes and 81% of the largest earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire. Based on BMKG records, the frequency of earthquakes in Indonesia increased from 7,169 times in 2017 to 11,920 times in 2018 and 11,588 times in 2019. Although in 2020 the number of earthquake events decreased to 8,258, the figure is still above average. The Friction Pendulum System (FPS) base isolation system is one of the innovative earthquake-resistant building systems popular in developed countries. Some of the advantages of base isolation systems, especially the FPS type, include maintaining the functionality of the building, an economical design alternative, reducing post-earthquake repair costs, and being able to provide protection for valuable objects in the building. In addition, base isolation can also be a method of reinforcing buildings that have historical value. However, this system also has certain limitations in its use. This study aims to analyse the efficiency of applying an FPS type base isolation system in an earthquake-resistant building of the UPT Vertical Surabaya Hospital. The study includes dimensional planning of base isolation devices, structural behaviour with FPS base isolation system compared to fixed base structure based on structural period, base shear force, floor absolute acceleration, displacement, inter-floor deviation, and energy dissipation ratio from hysteresis curve.
