Abstract

The film and video industry has experiencing significant technological changes in the past four years, proven with the presence of virtual production as an alternative shooting method that can greatly benefit from time efficiency, cost savings, and resource utilization. As a new technology, there are considerable differences between XR virtual production and traditional production that are crucial for every film crew looking to successfully utilize this technology. Therefore, to optimize xr virtual production efficiency, a documentary film is needed as an educational tool for film crews that have not used this technology before. This design is conducted using qualitative methods such as field observation to identify issues, literature review on virtual production as the topic subject and documentary as the design subject, reference and existing studies on the similar topic and media, and interviews with experts for content development. The research data is then processed through experimental studies and evaluated through depth interviews with stakeholders, XR virtual production experts and documentary specialist, also through user testing with target audience. The final output of this project will be a documentary film lasting less than twenty minutes, with the main idea of conveying explanations on the roles of five key film crew members throughout the pre-production, production, and post-production. The design uses an observatory approach, presenting real events through storytelling and narrative information. It is hoped that through this design, film crews will gain a better understanding of virtual production workflows in studio XR.
