Abstract
The aeration and sludge age or sludge retention time (SRT)are very important in designing, operating, and controlling biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) to produce quality effluent. There are several factors affecting the types of microbes in activated sludge (AS) including environmental factors and plant design. Even though microbes in activated sludge play important roles in biological wastewater treatment, previously the effect of aeration and sludge age on the types of microbes in activated sludge need more understanding. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of aeration and sludge age on the types of microorganisms in active sludge.
The microbial diversity will be analysed morphologically by visual inspection and light microscope. Understanding these relationships is crucial for optimizing activated sludge process, improving treatment efficiency and sustainable wastewater management. The microbes from the activated sludge process were analyzed at different aeration flow and sludge ages to determine the types of microbes.
The findings from this research revealed that the low aeration of 2L/min -4L/min and the SRT of > 8 days favour microbes to degrade organic matter with higher removal efficiency. The common microbes that were found include Bacillus, coccus, coccobacillus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Streptobacillus, and Vibrio.

Aerasi dan umur lumpur atau waktu retensi lumpur (SRT) sangat penting dalam perancangan, pengoperasian, dan pengendalian instalasi pengolahan air limbah biologis (IPAL) untuk menghasilkan limbah yang berkualitas. Terdapat beberapa faktor yang mempengaruhi jenis mikroba pada lumpur aktif (AS) antara lain faktor lingkungan dan desain pabrik. Meskipun mikroba dalam lumpur aktif memainkan peran penting dalam pengolahan air limbah secara biologis, sebelumnya pengaruh aerasi dan umur lumpur terhadap jenis mikroba dalam lumpur aktif perlu dipahami lebih lanjut. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh aerasi dan umur lumpur terhadap jenis mikroorganisme dalam lumpur aktif.
Keanekaragaman mikroba akan dianalisis secara morfologi dengan inspeksi visual dan mikroskop cahaya. Memahami hubungan ini sangat penting untuk mengoptimalkan proses lumpur aktif, meningkatkan efisiensi pengolahan, dan pengelolaan air limbah yang berkelanjutan. Mikroba hasil proses lumpur aktif dianalisis pada aliran aerasi dan umur lumpur yang berbeda untuk mengetahui jenis mikroba.
Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa aerasi yang rendah sebesar 2L/menit -4L/menit dan SRT > 8 hari mendukung mikroba untuk mendegradasi bahan organik dengan efisiensi penyisihan yang lebih tinggi. Mikroba umum yang ditemukan antara lain Bacillus, coccus, coccobacillus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Streptobacillus, dan Vibrio.
