Abstract

The HK field in the South Sumatra Basin has been depleted after being produced since 1998. An initial evaluation to determine the potential of reservoirs in the HK Field as CO_2 geological storage needs to be carried out. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of reservoirs in the HK Field as CO_2 geological storage and identify potential injection zones based on their characteristics from petrophysical analysis and rock typing using the hydraulic flow unit (HFU) method, as well as estimating CO_2 storage capacity with the original gas-in-place (OGIP) approach. The results of petrophysical analysis and rock typing showed that the research reservoir in the HK Field had good suitability as a CO_2 geological storage with a gross thickness of 201.42 m and a net of 83.8 m, an average porosity of 19%, and an average permeability of 527.11 mD at a reservoir depth of ± 1700 m with stratigraphy trapping of the seal layer with a gross thickness of 161.45 m. The HZ-3 zone was identified as a potential injection zone with a gross thickness of 52.69 m, an average porosity of 21%, and an average permeability of 786.14 mD. The estimated CO_2 storage capacity in the HZ-3 zone was 8.65 million tons theoretically and 4.05 – 7.78 million tons effectively.
