Abstract

The high environmental pollution generated by fossil fuel-based energy sources has driven the development of new and renewable energy sources (NRES), one of which is hydrogen. Hydrogen production through water splitting using solar energy and TiO2 photocatalysts has the potential to be developed due to its good stability and environmental friendliness. However, TiO2 has a drawback, one of which is a wide bandgap that requires high energy input. In this research, the synthesis of TiO2 doped CoO has been optimized to ensure that the surface area and light absorption of the material are significantly increased. The photocatalyst material was synthesized and characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), UV-Diffuse Reflectance (UV-DRS), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). Photocatalytic activity tests were conducted to determine hydrogen production using GC-TCD. Four variations of TiO2 were used, i.e., Bare TiO2, 0.1% CoO/TiO2, 0.3% CoO/TiO2, and 0.5% CoO/TiO2. The UV-Vis DRS characterization results showed a decrease in the bandgap with the addition of CoO material. The lowest bandgap value obtained was 2.6771 eV. The photocatalytic activity test results showed an increase in hydrogen production using 0.1% CoO/TiO2 compared to hydrogen production using bare TiO2 photocatalyst.
