Abstract

The modern era has provided new generations with a fresh perspective, vast knowledge, and a plethora of diverse experiences across various aspects of life. Despite this process of globalization, a few years ago, a growing number of people from newer generations have been growing their interest in the learning of and enlivening of the Indonesian culture. This design proposal aims to accommodate this interest of people to learn and embrace the culture as a part of preserving our cultural heritage. The project focuses on designing the building to be fit for all and as a representation of the culture of the local context. Located in Surakarta, and the building design will focus on the context of the city’s cultural background and characteristics. The force-based framework method is used in the project to determine the basic design force regarding the site study and user needs. The learning of local context drives most of the design part to represent the features of the local culture. The design approach utilizes the experiential architecture approach to maximize the effectivity of this community building outcome. The spatial arrangements are defined to maximize the experience of visitors, with the concept of connectedness to nature being highlighted on each part of the building. The building mass is formed with a mixture of traditional and modern features, the traditional as the study of the local context and the modern with the purpose of a building that can be easily accepted by the younger generations. The project is designed to be a multifunctional community space where people can learn and experience the culture, or leisurely and cherish the culture.
