Abstract

Form and function have become architectural discourse from time to time. New theories regarding form and function emerge along with the development of science and technology. Likewise, the theory of form follows function which was born in the era of modernist architecture has been debated several times by other similar views regarding the relationship between form and function. Through the exploration of the theory of form follows function, function is understood not only as a spatial function, but also as a function of expressing ideas. In this design, the aim to be achieved is to explore the role of architecture in expressing the identity and aspirations of its users as well as harmonizing the embodiment of the diversity of expressions produced through a form follows function recontextualization approach. The design uses a concept-based framework which guides the design process until it can produce the result as the big idea of creating a Student Community Center which can express the identity and aspirations of its users so that diversification of functions through the expression of identity and aspirations can be achieved. The type of identity and aspiration as a form of additional function that is to be presented is obtained through the domain-to-domain transfer method and applied to the formal and spatial concept of the design. The results of this design not only function as student facilities and accommodate the activities of the student community at ITS, but also convey the expression of ITS identity, the ITS student community, as well as the aspirations of its users which also become architectural and functional elements in the design.
