Abstract

Along with the development of technology and knowledge, the use of waste from coal combustion in the form of fly ash and bottom ash, hereinafter referred to as FABA, has been researched as a mixture of light brick materials. The light brick industry uses the concept of aerated concrete with the curing autoclave method. Based on SNI 8640:2018, light brick products on the market are included in the weight category of 500 kg/m3, namely a density in the range of 400 – 600 kg/m3. However, this autoclave process requires specialized technicians and large costs. The use of the moist curing method is an alternative in the light brick production process. Therefore, in order to produce lightweight brick products that are easy to implement at a low cost and density that is not far from market products, this study discusses the study of the composition of light bricks made from fly ash and bottom ash using the moist curing method with a planned density of 600 - 800 kg/m3.
The stages of implementing this research start from material preparation, initial mix design planning, composition determination, manufacturing and testing of test pieces. The specimens used were cubes with dimensions of 100 x 100 x 100 mm and 40 x 40 x 160 mm whose performance was reviewed based on SNI 8640:2018. Specimen testing was carried out at the age of 7, 14, and 28 days which consisted of testing density, compressive strength, water absorption, and drying shrinkage. The density, compressive strength, and drying shrinkage test methods refer to ASTM C1693-11 and the water absorption test refers to ASTM 796.
The results of this study show that the material composition for FABA Lightweight Brick using moist curing with a planned density of 600 - 800 kg/m3 is 349,06 kg/m3 cement; 45,83 kg/m3 fly ash; 98,72 kg/m3 bottom ash; 356,04 kg/m3 water; and 0,3496 kg/m3 aluminum powder. With this composition, the performance of light brick with a density of 28 days is 761,77 kg/m3, compressive strength of 3,07 Mpa is 28 days old, water absorption ability is 27,05% of 28 days old. Lightweight bricks with this performance are categorized in class IIB with a weight category of 700 kg/m3. However, the drying shrinkage is above 0,2%, so it does not meet the SNI 8640:2018 standard, which is below 0,2%. In terms of quality, FABA Lightweight Bricks using moist curing are no better than lightweight bricks with autoclave curing.
