Abstract

This project addresses the urgent need for integrated postpartum care facilities in Indonesia by using multisensory architecture to evoke positive emotions and enhance the well-being of mothers experiencing postpartum depression. The Sense of Coherence approach emphasizes manageability, meaningfulness, and comprehensibility in creating supportive and healing environments. Secondary data are utilized to analyze the primary cause of postpartum depression: a lack of social support. Documentaries are reviewed to understand user characteristics and prioritize design responses. The design project uses a force-based framework with culture as the initial bias, developing criteria for interaction groups: mother-inner circle, mother-other mothers, and mother-healthcare staff. From examining these group interactions, the proposed concepts focus on moving, connecting, resting, relaxing, and healing the users. The forces of healing through design: tranquility, and connectivity are addressed by creating spatial qualities that emphasize privacy and presence in guest rooms. These spaces highlight vision, auditory, and movement, enhancing interactions within the mother-inner circle. Communality is fostered to create the socialness of a space; the pond, yoga studio, and areas designated for book club activities in the library serve as spaces that can slow down users, decrease movement, and promote social interaction. For interactions between mothers and healthcare staff, the design incorporates elements of interiority that create implicit barriers, allowing mothers to feel still, in control, and able to customize their environments. Overall, the design project emphasizes the use of architectural elements to enhance visual, auditory, and movement sense, thereby creating more supportive and healing environments for mothers with postpartum depression.
