Abstract

"Architecture Without Bias: Deconstructing Boundaries Between Binaries" reimagines public spaces through the lens of inclusivity and fluidity. It responds to the ideology of the separate sphere, which dichotomizes the use of public and private spaces for women and men and addresses notions of feminine and masculine in architecture. This project introduces the People's Sphere, an innovative architectural endeavor located in Surabaya. Based on Gendered Space Theory and Queer Space Theory, this innovative design challenges traditional constructs of masculinity and femininity within the built environment.
Embracing deconstructivism architectural approach and concept-based framework, the People's Sphere dismantles binary notions ingrained in conventional architecture. Its design transcends rigid gender boundaries, offering a haven that celebrates diversity and welcomes all individuals regardless of their gender identity or expression by conducting observations, interviews, and deconstructing traditional norms in architecture within the design process. Surabaya's reputation for embracing egalitarian values provides an ideal backdrop for such a progressive venture.
The People’s Sphere incorporates diverse perspectives to reflect the experiences and needs of women, non-binary individuals, and people with disabilities. The design promotes inclusivity through flexible spaces that accommodate various activities and users, such as genderless toilets, non-segregating museum atrium, and art spaces. The deconstructed formal design of the space embrace continuity and fluidity concept which were shown from the shape of the building massing and the gallery circulations. The overall design is committed to social justice by creating environments that support and empower all identities and experiences.
