Abstract

Formal housing design is often only based on typology without considering the context of the surrounding environment, especially in disaster-prone locations including flooding. Therefore, these houses fail to function optimally as comfortable living spaces. In fact, Numerous precedent studies offer solutions for architectural designs suited to these conditions. According to Doxiadis, effective housing design should consider nature, man, society, shells, and networks. Adaptive Architecture theory is used to respond to flooding issues in this design. This design adjusts flood-prone housing based on Doxiadis' theory elements through the adaptive architecture a-conceptual framework. Adaptive elements are designed to respond to the interior environment, but also to be controlled for optimal comfort. Flooding problems are the focus in determining the force-based framework that considers the context nature, climate, area, and occupant productivity. The concept of “tanggap banjir” is applied in adjusting adaptive elements in the design. Residential units are designed with stilt structures and a lower area that provides flexibility of space that can be used by its occupants. Additionally, housing is designed by considering water absorption areas for rain. The flexibility in residential units also comes in the form of areas for residents' productive activities. The housing complex is equipped with infrastructure and facilities, including mosque, community halls, club houses, commercial areas, security posts, drainage, and access roads.
