Abstract

The threat of land conversion in Indonesia in 2023 has become a concern for the Food Security Sector in several provinces in Indonesia. The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) reported that agricultural land conversion reaches approximately 90,000 to 100,000 hectares per year. This phenomenon has led to a reduction in the area of productive agricultural land in Indonesia, which directly impacts national food supply. This situation underscore s the urgency of proposing the design of vertical farming structures. Vertical farming , as a response to the diminishing availability of agricultural land, offers a solution for future agricultural needs. However, constructing vertical farms that accommodate plants with diverse requirements necessitates adjustments. Therefore, the theory of adaptable architecture, characterized by its ability to undergo changes, match building functions with users' needs, and optimize productive use, is applied to vertical farming buildings to address evolving and varying requirements. Adaptable vertical farming design employs a User-Centered Design methodology, focusing on the goals, utility, and characteristics of the users. This approach is used to identify the primary users of the adaptable vertical farming design: plants and humans. An in-depth analysis of user characteristics provides stimuli to be addressed through adaptable architecture theory. The design results in a vertical farming building that can adapt to the needs of both plants and humans by utilizing types of adaptability: adjustable, versatile, refitable, and movable. Each type of adaptability is associated with specific design strategies applied to building layers. The adaptive features of each design element support the production of high-quality yields and fulfill local food needs, thereby reducing the high levels of food imports in Indonesia.
