Abstract

This research objective is to determine the effect of CaCO3 concentration and CO2 gas flow rate on corrosion of carbon steel. The material used in this research is limestone from Tuban Regency, East Java. The precipitation method with solution mixing is used for synthesizing of calcium carbonate. This method was chosen because the purity of CaCO3 can be form. The variations in this research are variations in the CO2 gas flow rate of 1 L/min and 2 L/min, which is for each variation using two types of solutions, namely 700 ppm and 1.000 ppm CaCO3 solutions. Using the weight loss method, the corrosion rate of specimens in solutions containing CaCO3 700 ppm and 1.000 ppm with a CO2 gas flow rate of 1 L/min is 1,71 mmy and 1,81 mmy. Meanwhile, the corrosion rate of the specimens in solutions containing CaCO3 700 ppm and 1.000 ppm with a CO2 gas flow rate of 2 L/min is 1,33 mmy and 1,25 mmy. For the Tafel polarization method, the corrosion rate of the specimen in solutions containing CaCO3 700 ppm and 1.000 ppm with a CO2 gas flow rate of 1 L/min is 0,48 mmy and 0,58 mmy. Meanwhile, the corrosion rate of the specimens in solutions containing CaCO3 700 ppm and 1.000 ppm with a CO2 gas flow rate of 2 L/min is 1,37 mmy and 0,98 mmy. The corrosion products in the specimens have calcite and siderite phase.
