Abstract

Geographically and geologically, Surabaya is highly vulnerable to earthquake disasters and risks. The city is located between two active faults, namely the Waru Fault and the Surabaya Fault, which have the potential for large earthquakes with scales reaching 6.5 Richter, causing mild to severe damage depending on the strength of the earthquake. Therefore, it is necessary to be prepared to deal with emergencies and risks due to earthquake disasters in the ITS Surabaya environment. This research aims to estimate the shear wave velocity (Vs) in the environment of Institute of Technology Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya through the application of the combined inversion method of HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) and microtremor dispersion. Through the combined inversion method of HVSR and microtremor dispersion, a 1D shear wave velocity (Vs) model estimation is obtained which shows four soil layers in the area of Institute of Technology Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya. Model 1 shows a soil layer with a thickness of 10.5 meters and Vs 105.08 m/s, a second layer with a thickness of 14.38 meters and Vs 207.15 m/s, and a third layer with Vs 402.63 m/s. Model 2 has a surface layer with a thickness of 8.00 meters and Vs 76.2 m/s, followed by a second layer with Vs 214.56 m/s. Model 3 shows a first layer with a thickness of 1.10 meters and Vs 65.82 m/s, followed by a second layer with a thickness of 6.90 meters and Vs 79.16 m/s, and a third layer with a thickness of 0.90 meters and Vs 159.82 m/s, with the bottom layer having Vs 209.95 m/s. The shear wave velocity variation analysis shows significant geological heterogeneity, with softer surface layers that can cause vibration amplification during earthquakes. These findings are important for earthquake-resistant infrastructure planning and risk mitigation strategies in the ITS Surabaya area.
