Abstract

The shipping industry is responsible for approximately 3.1% of annual CO₂ emissions and these emissions are increasing every year. In an effort to decarbonise the industry, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented new regulations under MARPOL Annex VI. These regulations include the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) which applies to vessels of 5,000 GT and above. The goal is to reduce CO₂ emissions by 40% by 2030. As part of this initiative, ships will be rated from A to E based on their compliance with the CII provisions. Technical and operational analyses of the recommended actions to comply with the CII requirements or improve the CII rating were carried out, the methods used were the CII calculation method and alternative methods of fulfilling the CII value. One of the compliance methods is the application of Rigid Wingsail which utilises wind as an auxiliary propulsion system for ships. The purpose of this final project is to determine the effect of Rigid Wingsail on the technical, operational and cost impacts of the ship. The method used in this research is Rigid Wingsail Assessment which aims to identify fuel consumption savings. Routes were selected by considering wind conditions and sailing distance. The vessels analysed are those sailing on the route. A Petrochemical Carrier Tanker with a DWT of 50,259 tonnes serving the India - Indonesia route was selected and planned to use 4 Rigid Wingsail units with a size of 30 m x 15 m. The analysis results show that, Rigid Wingsail is able to save the main engine fuel by 44% and increase the CII rating from E to B.
