Abstract

Technological developments in architecture make the relationship between humans and surrounding materials adapt to the digital world, resulting in novelty through the interaction of real and virtual objects. As one of the entertainment buildings, the cinema presents the interaction between real and virtual objects by integrating the quality of audience (real) and movie (virtual) elements to create a more immersive viewing experience. In this context, the existing cinema building design still separates the boundaries of real and virtual interaction through the screen. This condition becomes a design problem related to the theoretical gap and materiality innovation in cinema that has not been well defined. This design thesis aims to discover cinema innovation through exploring the boundary between real and virtual components in identifying the arrangement of materiality in cinema.
The design process uses a concept-based framework, with an experiential approach to the experience of cinema users. The design method used is research method in the form of literature review, precedent study, observation, and interview. The creative method used is parametric, through a brainstorming process with nest and quad techniques by diagram representation. The exploration process through research and design identifies criteria and changes in the arrangement of cinema elements based on the influence of the concept based on the site, building, and cinema details.
The result of this design is a multiplex cinema design that applies the big idea of liminal screen. Liminal screen is an interactive screen adaptation between real and virtual reality in the form of architectural boundaries. Liminal screen creates a more dynamic space atmosphere according to the atmosphere of the movie being played. The cinema consists of four studios, with the transformation of architectural elements in the form of a curved/semi-circular screen. The liminal screen concept affects the arrangement of the studios to be opposite each other. The exploration of the boundaries of the cinema theater evaluates the completion of materiality between real and virtual objects by placing flexible screen planes on the cinema’s experience zone and envolope.
