Abstract

Corrosion is a phenomenon of material degradation that poses a serious threat in the maritime world, particularly in the shipbuilding industry. To minimize corrosion, paint inhibitors are used, which to date still involve chemicals that potentially harm the environment and aquatic life. This study aims to test the potential of natural extract as a corrosion inhibitor in alkyd paint on ASTM A36 steel as test specimens with variations in paint inhibitor concentrations of 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9%, and to determine the optimal concentration based on the minimum corrosion rate. The inhibitors used were derived from durian seed extracts obtained through maceration. The inhibitors were mixed into the paint components and applied to the test specimens. Corrosion testing was conducted using a three-electrode cell with a saturated calomel electrode (SCE) as the reference electrode and a graphite auxiliary electrode. The research focuses on the inhibitor content, effective concentration, and the impact of the paint inhibitors on the corrosion rate. The inhibitor content analysis showed a flavonoid concentration of 6,83 mgQE/g, determined using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Corrosion tests revealed that the lowest corrosion rates occurred at 0,114 mmpy for a 6,969% inhibitor concentration in a corrosive marine environment (salinity 35‰) and 0,085 mmpy for a 6,159% inhibitor concentration in a corrosive medium with a salinity of 30‰. An economic analysis was conducted on paint with 6,159% and 6,969% inhibitor concentrations, which showed the minimum corrosion rate. These concentrations were further analyzed to ensure an optimal balance between cost and corrosion effectiveness. The cost of making the paint mixture with a 6,969% concentration is Rp. 113.448 per liter, while the cost for paint with a 6,159% concentration is Rp. 106.454 per liter. These concentrations were further analyzed to balance cost and corrosion effectiveness. The cost of producing paint with a 6,969% concentration was Rp. 113.448 per liter, while the cost for a 6,159% concentration was Rp. 106.454 per liter. Application of the paint on a 7700 DWT bulk carrier with dimensions Lpp 106,4 m, B 16,6 m, H 8,5 m, and T 6,6 m revealed that the paint with a 6,969% inhibitor concentration required Rp. 141.384.181, while the paint with a 6,159% inhibitor concentration required Rp. 132.667.152 for the anti-corrosion coating of a total hull area of 2679.4 m².
