Abstract

The marvelous splendor of the Merdeka Palace as a symbol of the Republic of Indonesia's government building has led to the phenomenon of the “tiny palaces” in the villages. The tiny palace, which is a village office with a design that replicates the Presidential Palace, is part of folk architecture designed by the Village Head himself. Closely related to political activities, the architecture of this office tends to become a symbol of the Village Government's institutional power. Therefore, this research seeks to explore the intentions of the designer of the village office and see how they fit with the perceptions of the community as users of the building who live in the same sub-culture.
Research methods employed were a two-phase combination of qualitative and quantitative methods using the tactics of in-depth interviews, observation, and Likert-scale questionnaires within a post-positivism paradigm. For obtaining a good representation, the research was conducted at Kemuningsari Kidul Village Office which represents the Pendalungan sub-culture and Dadapan Village Office which represents the Mataraman sub-culture.
Intention's exploration of the village office shows more detailed expressions of power such as identity establishment, a symbol of splendor, a symbol of wealth, a symbol of the authority, a symbol of pride, and a symbol of community protector. These intentions are perceived as compatible by the community in both villages through the mean test. The compatibility shows that there is a good communication mechanism between designers and building users. Through the dependency test, the compatibility of this perception is not influenced by the personal attributes of the community or the research location, so it is concluded that the compatibility of perception is influenced by the position of the designer and the community as building users. This research found that the designer's intention is in compliance with the user's perception because both are in the same sub-culture.
